Healthwatch Wirral carried out an Enter and View visit to Nazareth House Birkenhead. It offers specialist palliative care alongside residential and nursing care services, and the home can accommodate up to 57 residents, located in a quiet, suburban area of Manor Hill, Prenton.

The facilities offered include medical assistance 24/7, a Catholic chapel, restaurant-style dining, hairdressing, lounges and games rooms, an onsite hair salon, chiropody, laundry and housekeeping, and a variety of daily activity sessions.

Report Summary

Healthwatch Wirral Authorised Representatives found Nazareth House Birkenhead to be a welcoming and friendly environment, with a pleasant and homely atmosphere throughout. The exterior appeared well‑tended, and the interior decoration and equipment were well maintained, clean and fresh‑smelling. Dementia‑friendly signage and noticeboards were clearly displayed, communal areas were free from obstructions, and fire safety arrangements appeared well planned. Bedrooms that HWWARs visited were personalised with residents’ own furniture and photographs, all had en‑suite toilet and washbasin facilities, and bathrooms appeared clean, fresh and well equipped.

HWWARs were impressed by the compassion, consideration and attitudes staff demonstrated towards residents and each other. They consistently observed positive staff–resident interactions, and staffing levels during the visit appeared appropriate. Staff carried out regular checks on residents, increased monitoring for those with higher needs, and responded promptly to residents’ comfort, mobility and wellbeing. Infection prevention and control standards appeared high, supported by excellent housekeeping and compliant laundry procedures.

Residents told HWWARs that they liked the staff and spoke very positively about the care, food, cleanliness and environment. Residents commented, “I love being here” and “It’s 100% clean.” HWWARs saw a range of activities taking place, including music, quizzes and themed events, supported by a daily Activities Co‑ordinator. Residents and families used communal areas throughout the visit and appeared relaxed, comfortable and engaged together.

Staff engaged openly with HWWARs and spoke positively about feeling supported, listened to and well trained. Staff described management as firm but fair. The Home had safeguarding processes, falls management systems and alarm systems in place, which staff described as robust. The Manager reported good working relationships with GP and pharmacy services and positive use of community support and teletriage services, while highlighting ongoing difficulties accessing dental care and some challenges linked to hospital discharge.
