Arrowe Park Hospital: New parking changes explained

Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) is introducing a new parking system at Arrowe Park Hospital, with similar changes also planned for Clatterbridge Hospital.
From 1 July 2026, the Trust will begin rolling out an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, replacing the current barrier-based parking system.
What’s Changing?
The new system will be “ticketless”. Instead of taking a ticket on entry, cameras will record your vehicle number plate when you arrive and when you leave.
Before exiting, drivers will need to:
- Enter their vehicle registration at a pay station or app
- Pay for their stay if required
If you’re eligible for free parking, or you have been on site for 30 minutes or less, you won’t be charged—but you still need to enter your details before leaving.
Free parking and drop-off
- The first 30 minutes will be free for all vehicles, supporting short visits, pick-ups, and drop-offs
- A 20-minute drop-off zone will remain at the front of the hospital
- Taxi drivers will also receive 30 minutes free each visit
Blue Badge holders
Blue Badge holders will continue to park for free, but must:
- Register their badge at a pay station (or car parking office)
- Scan their badge before leaving
If Blue Badge spaces are full, badge holders can use any standard bay and still park for free, as long as they register correctly.
Why is this happening?
According to WUTH, the current system is reaching the end of its life and can cause:
- Delays at entry and exit barriers
- Queuing during busy periods
- Frustration when machines fail
The Trust says the new system is intended to:
- Reduce congestion across hospital sites
- Improve accessibility and ease of use
- Make better use of parking spaces
- Cut waiting times and environmental impact
Things to be aware of
While the changes aim to improve the experience overall, there are some points patients and visitors may want to keep in mind:
- You will need to remember to check in your vehicle details before leaving, even for free stays
- Payment is required before exit, rather than on arrival
- Some pay stations will accept cash, but card or app payments are encouraged
- The system will operate 24 hours a day, including overnight
