NHS urges people to use 111 during doctor strikes, warm weather and World Cup

Health leaders across Cheshire and Merseyside are asking people to plan ahead and use NHS services appropriately, as industrial action by resident doctors coincides with rising temperatures and major public events.

The strikes are set to take place from Monday 15 June to Friday 19 June 2026, which may result in fewer doctors being available and some disruption to services. During this period, NHS teams will prioritise life-saving care.

People are being encouraged to use NHS 111, online or via the NHS App, for non-emergency healthcare needs.

Dr Fiona Lemmens, Executive Clinical Director for NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, has urged the public to:

  • Continue to use NHS services responsibly
  • Use NHS 111 or the NHS App for urgent but non-emergency medical help
  • Only attend A&E or call 999 in a life-threatening emergency

Where needed, NHS 111 can also arrange a call back from a healthcare professional or book appointments at appropriate local services, including pharmacies, GP practices, urgent treatment centres or A&E.

Residents are also being reminded to attend any planned appointments unless contacted directly by the NHS.
