Improving GP Access in Wirral: What’s Changing and What’s Next

Engagement News - 20 October 2025

Healthwatch Wirral has reviewed how local GP practices are improving access to care as part of the Primary Care Access Recovery Plan (PCARP).

PCARP is an NHS programme designed to make it quicker and easier for people to contact their GP. It supports practices to modernise their systems — for example by upgrading phone lines, improving online booking, and offering appointments with a wider range of professionals.

What’s improved

• Most practices now have modern telephone systems, reducing long waits and missed calls.

• Online booking and care navigation (where reception staff guide patients to the right type of care) are becoming more common.

• Many practices now offer enhanced access — this means some practices offer appointments during the day in the evenings or at weekends, sometimes at other GP practices, to make it easier for people who can’t attend during working hours.

• Other skilled roles are being used in GP surgeries, such as pharmacists, physiotherapists and social prescribers, so people can see the right person more quickly.

• Overall, most patients said their GP experience was positive, and trust has improved in local practice teams.

What still needs work

• Some patients still find it hard to get through on the phone or book appointments promptly.

• Digital options like online forms and apps still appear to be an issue for people who aren’t confident with technology.

• Not everyone knows about evening and weekend appointments, or about the new staff roles available.

• Training and communication need to be consistent, so everyone receives a good experience, whichever practice they use.

What happens next

Healthwatch Wirral will continue to share local feedback with NHS partners to help make sure GP access works for everyone, including those who face barriers such as age, disability or limited digital skills.
