Hantavirus update: important reassurance for Wirral residents
News - 11 May 2026

Healthwatch Wirral is sharing an update following national confirmation that a small number of passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship are being monitored at Arrowe Park Hospital as a precaution to Hantavirus.
UK health authorities have confirmed that the risk to the general public remains very low, and there is no need for people to change their day‑to‑day activities.
What does this mean for local people?
- Arrowe Park Hospital is operating as normal
- People should attend appointments and seek care as usual
- There is no risk to patients, visitors or staff
- Those being monitored are cared for in a fully separate area, with robust infection control in place
- Hantavirus is not spread through everyday social contact, such as being near others in public or visiting local services.
Support and care
Those affected are being supported by NHS and public health teams, with a strong focus on both safety and compassionate care during what can be an unsettling time.
Professor Robin May, Chief Scientific Officer at UKHSA, said:
“Staff at Arrowe Park have once again demonstrated their commitment and professionalism in responding rapidly to a health emergency, and we are very grateful. “
