Stop Loan Sharks – #AllIWantForChristmas campaign

Nov 23, 2021 | News, Newsletter

Data shows that Christmas is the second highest reason that people borrow money from a loan shark. #AllIWantForChristmas is a campaign launched by Stop Loan Sharks which hopes to encourage people to speak up about their struggles with loan sharks around Christmas time and to raise awareness of the help and support that is available.

What is a Loan Shark?

Stop Loan Sharks advises that if you can answer yes to one or more of these questions you might be borrowing from a loan shark:

  • Did they offer you a cash loan?
  • Did they not give you paperwork?
  • Did they add huge amounts of interest or APR to your loan?
  • Have they threatened you?
  • Are you scared of people finding out?
  • Have they taken your bank card, benefit card, passport, watch or other valuables from you?

What can I do about a Loan Shark?

Stop Loan Sharks investigate and prosecute loan sharks – their official title is the England Illegal Money Lending Team. They are the lead organisation in England with the power to prosecute loan sharks and illegal money lenders. Since 2004, they have helped over 30,000 people who have borrowed from loan sharks.

You can safely and confidentially report loan sharks either on their website: or you can call the 24/7 helpline on 0300 555 2222.

Worried about someone else?

Friends, family, neighbours and community members can be a vital lifeline to those involved with loan sharks. If you are worried that someone you know may be a victim of illegal money lending, reassure them that Stop Loan Sharks and support services are still there to help and direct them to sources of support.

You can report the loan shark anonymously on the link above or call the helpline to speak to a member of the team in confidence.
