This self-care week (15-21 November) Wirral residents are being reminded that self-care doesn’t mean do it yourself.
As main health services such as GPs, walk-in centres and A&E are busier than ever, the best way to help avoid long waits is to prevent health and wellbeing issues getting to the point of needing medical help. Self-care is the term used to describe just that, but it doesn’t mean you have to do all the work yourself.
Dr Paula Cowan, Chair of NHS Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group said “Being able to self-care for common illnesses like earache, sore throats and upset stomachs is really important. Symptoms of these illnesses usually resolve themselves in a few days and can be treated with medicine available over the counter from most supermarkets and pharmacies.”
“We want to empower and support people to take charge of their own health. Everyone can make small changes to their lifestyle to help improve their physical and mental health and wellbeing, such as maintaining an active lifestyle, eating a well-balanced diet, quitting smoking, and drinking less alcohol. NHS teams across Wirral are backing the national Help us Help You campaign which aims to help direct people to the most appropriate health service for their need.
Dr Cowan added, “We’d like to use self-care week to encourage people to talk to their local high-street pharmacy or go online to find health advice via 111.”
Self-care advice about a wide range of minor illnesses is available from the NHS online; www.nhs.uk has an A-Z of conditions, with top tips on self-care and when you need to get an appointment with a healthcare professional.
Antibiotics will not help treat a cold or flu. By using antibiotics, you may be reducing their effectiveness in the future. Cold and flu symptoms should subside within a few days following plenty of rest, keeping well hydrated and taking over the counter medications as needed. When it comes to antibiotics, take your doctor’s advice on whether you need them or not.
