Make sure emergency services can find you this winter

Nov 20, 2020 | News

As winter approaches it’s so important to make sure that medical services can find you in an emergency. That’s why we’re sharing some tools and information to help an ambulance find you as quickly as possible if you have an accident or emergency.

Firstly, make sure your house number is clearly visible outside your house. This could mean putting your house number on your front door or gate if it’s not clearly marked already, or just turning on an outside light if you have one, so that the ambulance crew doesn’t have to lose any time looking for your address.

North West Ambulance service have launched their new campaign #HelpUsFindYou so you can check their Facebook or Twitter page for more information and helpful videos to explain why this is so important.

There is also a free app called what3words that can help to explain your precise location in case of an emergency. This is especially useful if you are in a more rural area but it can also be used to help the ambulance service find you after a road traffic accident or if your home address is harder to find.

What3words is a simple way to communicate precise locations quickly and accurately. Everyone can use what3words for free by downloading the app or going to The system is available in over 40 different languages.

You can find a guide on how to use what3words here:

North West Ambulance Service is encouraging local residents to download the what3words app or to go to and look up the three word location for their home address, which can be given to the ambulance service in case of an emergency. It could save them precious time and help them to reach you or your loved ones quicker.
