Further improvements for Guinea Gap

Sep 23, 2015 | News

The Leisure Pool at Guinea Gap Leisure Centre in Seacombe will close for four weeks from this Friday 25th to allow for structural repairs to take place.

The closure will cause some disruption to activities that take place in the Leisure Pool, mainly affecting the open, public swimming sessions. Wherever possible, scheduled classes or swimming lessons are being transferred to the adjoining Training Pool at Guinea Gap.

Cllr Chris Meaden, Wirral Council Cabinet member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said: “We have been delighted with how popular the improvements to other parts of Guinea Gap leisure centre have proved with members of the public and we are keen to maintain the increased level of visitors we have been getting.

“For that reason, I’m asking people to bear with us while these essential repairs are carried out – the end result, as with the new fitness centre and five-a-side pitches, will be well worth it and will make the roof structure sound for many years to come.”

Guinea Gap is home to the oldest public swimming baths in Wirral, opened more than 100 years ago. Over that time it has created a celebrated and significant history and heritage, with a number of world records being established there assisted by the fact that the pools were filled with salt water from the Mersey, rather than fresh water. In the 1970s, the pool also hosted performances from a visiting Dolphin Show, all the way from Florida.

The last few years has seen the main structural roof supports on what is now the Leisure Pool become gradually corroded to such a level that work needs to be carried out to sort it out.

For that reason, the Leisure Pool will close at the end of business on Friday 25th September and, if the work goes according to schedule, will reopen on Monday 26th October.

During this period of time the following activities will be affected:

• Swim Wirral Lessons: these lessons will continue to be delivered but will be moved from the Leisure Pool into the Training Pool for the duration of the closure. Lessons will take place on the same day and time as already booked.

• Education Swimming: Schools have been informed that the leisure pool will not be available during this period. However, most schools who use Guinea Gap for education swimming hire both pools so the training pool will be used for the delivery of education swimming.

• Water Based Exercise Classes: Unfortunately it will not be possible to accommodate the following sessions during the period of pool closure – Aqua Tots, Aqua, Aqua Natal, Aqua Plus, Aqua Zumba and Little Ducks. These sessions are available at other times at other Wirral public swimming pools.

• Public Swimming: All public swimming that usually takes place in the Leisure Pool will be cancelled during the period of closure. In addition, early evening public swimming (4pm – 5:30pm) in the Training Pool will be cancelled Monday to Friday for the duration of the closure. This is to enable the continuation of the junior swimming lessons.
