The Census is a unique survey that takes place every 10 years in England. By taking part you help inform decisions that shape services in your community

Households across Wirral will soon be asked to take part in this nationwide survey of housing and the population. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941 due to the war.

Information from the digital-first census will help decide how services are planned and funded in your local area. This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, housing or new bus routes.

On the Wirral 22% of the population is over 65. That’s approx 71,500. Accurate Census data means we can plan and provide the right level of services.

Funding received is based on Census data, so the more Census completions the more funding Wirral will get.

Services that use Census data need the most accurate figures they can get. If we are down by just 1% of people on the Wirral, that’s 3250 more people that we are having to supply services to than we thought there were. 5% would mean 16,000 not accounted for but still accessing and using services.

Healthwatch Wirral are here to help drive how services are funded based on what people tell us- so local information helps us to help you!

Households will receive a letter with a unique access code in the post, shortly after 1st March, allowing them to complete their questionnaire online. Paper questionnaires will be available on request.

Census day is March 21st 2021

Help is available to help you complete the census will be available in loads of ways including online and telephone support from 1st March on 0800 141 2021. You can also ask a friend, relative or other trusted person to help you

Results will be available in approximately 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.

Myth busters:

Personal data is locked away and not accessible to anyone for 100 years. The Police, the benefits agency, immigration, TV licensing, are not allowed access. Your data is 100% safe.

You can complete anytime after receiving the letter and code. It does not have to be filled in on 21st , it just has to reflect the household circumstances on the 21st

Field officers will not be accessing anyone’s property after 21st March or before. Any doorstep calling is to follow up non completion and to encourage completion and to signpost support.
