Bridging Resources Information and Direction for Everyone (BRIDGE) Forum 24th/25th February 2021 Snapshot

Mar 4, 2021 | BRIDGE Forum, News

‘Foundations of Quality Improvement should always have what patients tell us about their treatment and care, at the heart of everything as a system we plan and do. We must be able to evidence that all actions and decisions made come back to this, making certain that everyone feels respected, involved, and valued at each and every part of the journey. We should all feel confident that we are either giving or receiving quality care.’

NHS England and NHS Improvement, Healthwatch Wirral, Age UK Wirral, Wirral System

These are the highlights from the Bridge Forums. Detailed notes with questions and comments can be found here

Invited Speakers

  • Michael Chantler – Wirral CCG- Asst Communications Director

  • Louise Harland-Davies and Michelle Gough – Wirral Community Champions Coordinator

Wirral CCG update

Key messages

COVID-19 update

  • Roadmap published by the government this week gives hope for the future
  • Lockdown and vaccine seem to have had an impact on hospitalisations BUT we have a way to go yet
  • Around Christmas we had 4000 COVID-19 inpatients across the NW; now we’re down to over 2000, which is just below the April 2020 peak
  • Backlog of planned surgeries – NHS recovery is going to take a long time
  • “We cannot live in a COVID zero world now”
  • Vaccine is not 100% – there will always be a level of risk

COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign

  • Vaccination programme – situation is really positive
  • England doing really well due to NHS structures – our systems work
  • Pace is driven by availability of vaccine but we do have consistent supply
  • Wirral had 94% uptake of vaccine in cohorts 1-4, now into cohorts 5 and 6 (over 65 and clinically vulnerable) – near 70% of over 65s

Public Health Wirral

FLU vaccination campaign

Key messages

  • The flu vaccination campaign has been very successful this year, but it is still important to get the flu vaccination if offered.
  • Adults at high risk from flu are also most at risk from COVID-19. The free vaccine is more important than ever, to help protect the nation from a double threat this winter.
  • The flu vaccine won’t protect you against COVID-19, but it will help protect you against flu and the potentially serious infection that can cause complications, leading to hospital admission.
  • New advice from NHS England suggests there is a minimal risk in getting the flu and COVID vaccinations close together.
  • GP’s are this week being urged to contact patients who have still not had Flu vaccine such as unpaid Carers, pregnant women, people with Learning Disabilities, 50-56 age range.
  • If you are eligible for a free vaccine you can also access this at several pharmacies- Boot the Chemist has recently advertised this.

John Kenny – Census

Taking part in the Census on the Wirral

Key Messages

  • We use census data to drive health programmes and to allocate funding
  • Census driven by facts and not myths
  • March 21st is census day
  • This year census is Digital First – first option is to complete online – CAN ask for paper copy
  • There will be a call centre for assistance – they can talk people through it, take verbal answers and provide language assistance
  • Friends and family can help complete online, including young people – householder just needs to agree
  • Those who haven’t responded will get reminder letters over the next 3 weeks – door knocking will be a last resort and COVID-secure
  • It is a legal requirement to complete the form – people can be fined if they refuse but this is very rare
  • Census data is highly protected by GDPR and specific census regulations
  • School education programme – sending links to school groups – lots of Wirral schools taking part, it is geared up for home schooling – encourages kids to see what the census is about
  • This census will help to record carers – Carer’s Allowance does NOT count as being a paid carer so people should record themselves as unpaid carers

Louise Harland-Davies/ Michelle Gough – Wirral Council

COVID-19 vaccination

  • Current focus is on COVID-19 vaccination – HWW have leaflets in all Wirral vaccine hubs to collect experiences.
  • Vast majority of feedback so far is extremely positive
  • Leaflets collect feedback from those who have already had vaccine

Care Homes

  • People haven’t been able to visit their loved ones in care homes – some really poor experiences of trying to get access
  • HWW hosted a Care Home Forum for relatives of those in care homes to come and share their experiences – it was a very emotional meeting
  • a report of everyone’s experiences and discussion will be available on our website
  • The care was mostly good, the issues have been around visiting – homes have had to follow guidance from government and national management
  • There will be a second online forum to speak to those who may have had better experiences so we can share good practice with homes
  • Third forum with care home staff/managers to feedback barriers and challenges that they have faced and share best practice
  • Final report will compile all evidence and feedback from all three forums
  • Please get in touch if you know people who may wish to join the second forum!
